Amalgam dental restorations, metallic in appearance and commonly known as "fillings", were formerly used for the treatment of cavities.
The latter consist of a mixture of several products including mercury, an element toxic to the body.
But no study has yet demonstrated systemic toxicity associated with amalgam. The main risks which are contributed to them are cracks and fractures of the dental walls; in fact, amalgams emit volume expansion over time and when the remaining tooth wall is relatively thin, it can then crack or fracture.
The fracture can in some cases extend to the tooth root and unfortunately require extraction. In this situation our dentists then indicate the replacement of amalgams by prevention of dental fractures, using a
biocompatible composite resin, natural in appearance, resistant and highly aesthetic. The second indication for amalgam replacement is aesthetic; If your amalgams are visible when you smile and you want a more aesthetic smile, our practitioners of the Clinique Dentaire de Meyrin can then change these restorations with composite resin.
