Dental care

Conservative treatment of cavities

Insufficient oral hygiene, a lack of control at the dentist and other risk factors such as nutrition, smoking or hyposalivation induced by various factors predispose to caries infections.

The treatment of a cavity consists in the removal of the lesion using a diamond bur and in the most conservative way possible, that is to say by keeping the maximum of natural tooth substance.

The resulting cavity is then filled with a biocompatible composite resin of natural appearance, highly aesthetic, inducing no toxicity to biological tissues.

The advantage of this white resin is also explained by its modulus of elasticity (or its hardness) comparable to that of a natural tooth, and which allows a longevity of the restoration guaranteed over several years, or even a lifetime.

This method is also indicated for the replacement of old unsightly restorations, replacement of amalgams (commonly known as “filling”) or for dental fractures.

When the size of the cavity of the decayed tooth is relatively large, we instruct the patient to make an onlay (= a dental crown that is more conservative and less destructive for a tooth), a ceramic or composite piece of aesthetic value. upper made by our dental laboratory.

Following the size and removal of the decay, the dentist takes a dental impression which will then be sent to the laboratory. Once the part has been made by the dental technician, it is returned to the practitioner and then sealed to the tooth with optimal continuity.

Several advantages of an onlay compared to a composite resin applied directly to the chair (in the case of significant caries): the anatomy of the tooth is reproduced in a natural way and with an incomparable aesthetic, no polymerization tension (hardening) postoperative resin and therefore better adaptation of the long-term restoration, and optimal continuity between the part and the natural tooth thus preventing subsequent carious or pigmentary re-infiltration. These advantages therefore result in better longevity and aesthetics in the long term.

If a tooth has an advanced level of decay (often requiring root treatment, or "devitalization" of the tooth), then a ceramic crown may be indicated after removal of the infectious tissue and preparation of the remaining dental organ. Its resistance and tenacity have been demonstrated in numerous literatures and displays a highly aesthetic and natural visual aspect.
