Dental plaque results in the buildup of bacteria on the teeth. The main responsible factor is insufficient oral hygiene due to poorly mastered technique or inadequate frequency.
Various and multiple factors, such as salivary content or even genetic factors, will then calcify this dental plaque in the form of more or less substantial stones: dental tartar.
The accumulation of tartar and dental plaque is responsible for gingival inflammation which clinically results in redness, swelling, bleeding or even pain.
The long-term progression of these pathogens can then induce periodontitis.
This disease refers to deep lesions of the gums, more precisely at the level of the supporting tissues of the tooth.
This infection will thus destroy the attachment of the tooth, develop with progressive tooth mobility, until leading to the loss of the tooth in advanced cases.
The accumulation of dental plaque is also responsible for the formation of caries, an infectious process produced by cariogenic bacteria that produce and secrete acid,
resulting then in the demineralization of the enamel, then of the dentin, and being able in the long term to produce pulpitis (nerve infection of the tooth) inducing painful symptoms to the patient.
The prevention of these pathologies is possible thanks to the role of our dental hygienist, who does not stop only with scaling; reception of the patient, diagnosis of oral pathologies using clinical examination and intraoral X-rays, analysis of weak points in the patient's oral hygiene, instruction of auxiliary hygiene means such as use of interdental brushes, dental floss, monotuff, interdental sticks, the use of electric toothbrushes, air polishing for the removal of certain stains, and many other functions.
All this in a personalized program adapted to the patient. If dental lesions are diagnosed our practitioner then refers the patient to our dentists.
The optimal frequency of appointments with the dental hygienist is six-monthly.
At this rate, the patient's oral health situation is well controlled by our practitioners of the clinique Dentaire de Meyrin in order to intercept any new lesion and remain in minimal treatment if necessary.
For this we send a letter to every patient every 6 months inviting them to consult our dental hygienist. The secret to long-term healthy teeth is regular check-ups !
